Cavs vs Pistons Key Matchups and Plus-Minus Expectations: Where the Series Gets Decided

Share

This series is gonna be decided by who controls the matchups at the perimeter and in the paint.

Here's what matters.

Donovan Mitchell vs Detroit's Defense

Mitchell averaged 23.1 points per game against Toronto on 43.8 percent shooting. But Toronto was crowding him. Making him work. Against Detroit? Same gameplan but better execution.

Detroit's got multiple bodies to throw at him. Dean Wade is gonna get minutes on Mitchell but they'll also have Robinson and other wings chase him off the three point line and turn him into a pull up guy.

Mitchell shot 33 percent from three against Toronto. If Detroit can keep that percentage down and force him into tough mid-range shots, they neutralize his scoring punch.

Edge: Detroit

James Harden vs Detroit's Perimeter

Harden was 45.3 percent from the field and 37.5 from three against Toronto. He was efficient. He ran the offense. He had 20.6 PPG in the series.

But Detroit forces half-court basketball. If the Cavs can't get into transition and Harden is running around in half-court sets, he's not as effective.

The Pistons' best defense is when Cade is running the offense and everyone is locked in. If they can get Harden into isolation situations where he's not creating for others, Detroit's length and athleticism becomes a problem.

Edge: Even

Evan Mobley vs Jalen Duren

This is huge. Mobley shot 58 percent from the field against Toronto. He was dominant. 18.1 PPG, 8.6 rebounds per game.

But Duren is different. Duren is younger, more athletic, and he's got help. Jalen Duren and Anthony Thompson are gonna be physical with Mobley. They're gonna make him work on defense.

Mobley is better than Duren but Duren comes with Detroit's whole defensive system. If Mobley doesn't get comfortable early, Detroit controls the paint.

Edge: Mobley by a bit

Jarrett Allen vs Detroit's Inside Game

Allen was huge against Toronto. 11.4 PPG, 8.3 rebounds, solid on defense with 2.29 blocks per game.

But he got pushed around at times. Detroit is bigger. Detroit is more physical in the paint. Duren (10.6 PPG, 9.4 RPG) and Anthony Thompson will test Allen early.

Allen needs 13+ points and 10+ rebounds to keep the Cavs competitive. If he's passive or gets in foul trouble, the Pistons control the glass.

Edge: Detroit

Cade Cunningham vs The Cavs

32.4 PPG. 7.1 APG. He was unstoppable against Orlando but the Cavs have multiple options on him.

Cleveland can throw Dean Wade, Mitchell, Harden at him depending on the situation. They can crowd him. They can make him uncomfortable.

The key is not letting him get into rhythm early. If Cunningham gets 15+ in the first half, Detroit is gonna win. If the Cavs can hold him to 10-12, it's a winnable game.

Edge: Cavs

Plus Minus Expectations

Mitchell and Harden combined need a +8 or better. If they're on the court together they gotta be net positive.

Mobley and Allen need to be around even or plus. If the Cavs' front court is getting minus minutes, they lose.

Max Strus off the bench was a huge difference against Toronto (+15 in 28 minutes). He needs those same minutes and that same energy against Detroit.

The Bottom Line

The Cavs can win this if they control the Mitchell/Harden minutes and keep Mobley comfortable offensively.

Detroit wins if Cade gets off early and their perimeter defense forces Mitchell into tough shots.

It all comes down to who executes their gameplan first.
